The galaxy map is actually extremely cool, as it allows you to smoothly zoom from galaxy to planet level with minimal work. Once you pick a planet to explore, you'll be able to make your way around it in your customizable exploration vehicle. We don't know if you'll again be limited by artificial boundaries, but it sounds like there will be plenty of chances to see the sights.
