The Third Age is a capable but not spectacular turn-basedRPG. Some turn-based fans might think it's structured a bit too much "bythe book" in its attempt to bring Lord of the Rings to a turn-based RPGenvironment. On the other hand, its simple and straightforward gameplay opens itup to gamers who might not be fans of the turn-based genre and it’s hard tofind fault with that.

There is plenty of familiar territory to explore along with new locations and characters that expand the story beyond what we already know. It’s a tribute to the work that inspired it and some of the most fun I had on my Xbox over the holidays. I highly recommend it.

The history of Middle Earth and various back-stories are explained in detail too, which likewise is bound to please fans. But the harsh reality is that all it boils down to is a basic adventure game with an adequate but clichéd battle system. An RPG for the mass-market? It'll never work.
