In case you haven’t figured out the SNK/Playmore format by now, it’s quite simple: the company is clearly committed to keeping the 2D arcade flame alive, even when they make the move to slickly produced 3D. While some folks don’t quite understand this devout dedication to the preservation of the past, you really have to admire the steadfast determination SNK shows year after year. Especially since they bought themselves back from the dead to the delight and surprise of many who thought they‘d never see another title from them ever again. The King of Fighters Maximum Impact MANIAX for the Xbox is their latest, a feature enhanced translation of last year’s PlayStation 2 fighter with a number of additions that help recommend the game to those who ran out and grabbed the original version.

Story mode is laughable, as the "story" consists of some dork introducing your next opponent, who says their awkward-sounding spiel before the fight starts. However, you have the option of doing team attacks in here, and mission mode is worth toying around with. Win with certain parameters (starting with less power, special moves disabled, doing a six-hit combo, etc.) to unlock some goodies.
