The base gameplay is decent, although the inclusion of power-up attacks and platforming obstacles only serves to muddle the experience, making success feel more like a matter of blind luck than skill. Still, it’s at least a solid direction for the Sonic series, and I hope Backbone gets the chance to refine it in the future.

Mainly, I checked it out just to see if it looked as bad as the early screens suggested. It doesn't. It looks just about as good as any of the 3-D Sonic games that were put out for the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2.We'll definitely upload nicer screens once Sega gives us new ones. Until then, don't give those old ones much merit. Sonic Rivals for the PSP is due out this fall.

This Sonic fan was sorely underwhelmed by this latest offering. After a strong multiplayer component in the last game, I was feeling more pumped than ever for the ultimate one-on-one Sonic. It’s still a good idea, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. Hopefully things change as development progresses.
