NBA '06 review:
When NBA launched with the PlayStation Portable, it was the first pro basketball game on the handheld, but not exactly the best. The major issue with the otherwise fine looking, fast-playing game was the shooting control that required multiple button taps to pull off the simplest of shots. This broke the game’s pacing right from the start and although we eventually got used to this method of shooting, it felt as if we were forced to learn a play mechanic more akin to a golf game than basketball. Well, six months later and in time for the season, NBA 06 is on the scene with simpler, more intuitive shooting controls, improved graphics and some fun mini-games that should keep b-ball fans of all skill levels busy. However, the more arcade-like pace of the game coupled with a few AI exploits allows seasoned video game ball players to crush the weaker teams and new players out for a few Wi-Fi matches.

SCEA seeks to bring the fun of the NBA to the PSP, but again misses the mark, with a minimal gaming mode, spotty AI and gaming-style clash.

NBA '06 review:
Overall, NBA 06 is a very satisfying basketball simulation for the PSP. The quick gameplay, stellar animation, improved graphics, better AI and addition of more minigames make it a very compelling package. The top-notch online multiplayer implementation is also appreciated. Nonetheless, the actual gameplay is still pretty simplistic and more varied plays would be welcomed.

NBA '06 review:
However, improvement is improvement and NBA 06 is much improved and certainly worth a look. The fact that the game looks better is nice, and the gameplay's actually worth checking out once you get the hang of it. Next year, we should have a real monster on our hands. As is, it's still maturing, but its fangs are getting sharper.

NBA '06 review:
We'd also liked to have seen a franchise mode added. The season mode and minigames are nice and all, but NBA 06 just doesn't deliver where it really counts.

NBA '06 review:
Tapping the button at the right time during the shot (i.e. when the ball turns green) results in the best chances of ripping cord. It's a cool system that, thankfully, is much more attuned to button inputs this time around. Also, instead of multiple button pushes, the shot is more of a hold-and-release system (with the same color indicators to help guide your shot release).
