Points are easy enough to earn. You just have to satisfying certain criteria, such as winning face-offs and scoring goals, during the normal course of playing.Chances are, however, that no one is going to buy or rent this game just so they can unlock the Edmonton Oilers' Wayne Gretzky that scored 50 goals in 39 games during the 1981 season.

Gretzky NHL review:
The game is a pretty decent port of its PS2 sibling. Unfortunately, the generally lackluster gameplay and sporadic framerate make it hard to recommend to anyone except those that must absolutely have a portable hockey game. Gretzky NHL isn’t bad, is certainly aided by addition of online play, and is currently – and will likely remain for a while – the only option.

I’m not one to make light of my fellow man (at least not in public or to his face), but one of the funniest fights I ever saw revolved around hockey. About ten years ago, I was sitting in a bar with some friends when I overheard some loud, loaded guys debating the merits of different sports. One guy got off a good one on hockey, calling it a game made for girls that combined figure skating and slapping around a burnt cupcake with a bent broom. Of course, there happened to be a bunch of die hard Rangers fans at a booth nearby, and that was that. We had to get out of there before the police showed up, because like a good new Yorker, you just find a better bar after a brawl breaks out at the old one. If I had a time machine, I’d go back and tell those guys pre-battle that there’s not even a hockey season to fight about this year, and no one knows just when we’ll see one again.

Gretzky NHL review:
If you are the type of fan that would be bothered by some of these minor details or you disliked the original Gretsky NHL 2005, you may want to wait until there is a tad more competition before investing your forty bucks. And if you don't happen to fit into either of those categories, just go back to playing Lumines. You know you want to.-- Nik Dunn

Gretzky NHL review:
The options in Gretzky NHL’s season mode are geared more toward letting you customize the game in any way you want. If you feel like making life hard, you can engage in a fantasy draft and then play with the pieces you pick up. Alternately, you can jump into the misnamed Pro Manager mode and swap players between teams to your heart’s content.
