While Darkstalkers is a title fans like myself will surely appreciate and newcomers can enjoy, one has to wonder why now? Five years after this title's first release and over 11 years since it started in '94, a few problems plague this title as they have the other compilations such as Marvel vs Capcom 2. That is, many of these sprites are simply showing their age. Thankfully on a new system, with a wide screen, and strictly in the Darkstalkers universe, Chaos Tower manages to look much newer than it actually is, and less dated when not compared against characters of unrelated franchises.

More to the point it does an excellent job of tying together the fragmented series that includes the Hunter and Saviour variations, resulting in a must-have for anybody who’s enjoyed the titles from the past. It’s definitely not for everyone however; those who’ve bought a sexy new PSP just to show off its fancy visuals and technology will wander what all the fuss is about.

Eight seconds out of every 60 to 90 seconds isn't so terrible. Heck, the load times in the North American version of the game are actually a second or two shorter than those in the Japanese version.The bottom line is this: if you're looking for an arcade style 2D fighting game that you can take anywhere, then you need to get Darkstalkers Chronicle: The Chaos Tower.

While Darkstalkers never enjoyed the same following as Street Fighter, the series does possess a unique charm. Every character is chock full o' personality, from the half-naked succubus to the goofy sasquatch. The quirkiness survives intact on the comparatively small screen of the PSP, offering a faithful fighting port.

Waiting has never been my strong suit, but when there is something worth waiting for, it tends to bother me a lot less. Darkstalkers Chronicle is one excellent example of something worth waiting for. Besides being a beautiful translation of one of Capcom’s best fighting game series, it is quite possibly the best handheld fighting game ever created. -- Nik Dunn
