Ape Escape: On The Loose review:
Ape Escape is the first platformer for the PSP, so in a way, it sets the example for the other games to follow. With a great gameplay experience, and everything you'd expect from a platformer and more, it definitely sets a large example for others to follow in! It has many enemies, vast levels, monkeys with different difficulties to capture, puzzles, and the list continues to go on. The music is as you would expect from a platform genre game, and there are sound effects for basically every action. While squeezing all of this onto a single UMD, SCEA also manages to keep the quality of the graphics high as well.

However, those of us that love Ape Escape knew there was going to be trouble. Simply, the game was built around a (for its day) unique dual-analog control scheme. Since this isn’t possible on the PSP, what’s left is merely a slightly annoying, if charming, run-of-the-mill platformer.

The cheerful music complements the jovial sound effects very well. The voice acting is purposely sharp, though it is hardly annoying.Ape Escape: On the Loose is a solid adventure/platform game for the PSP. It could have been a great game, but the PSP’s limitations simply did not allow this to happen. Nonetheless, Sony worked around the hardware difficulties as best as they could.
