This is where Ape Academy stumbles and falls - very few games contain any real depth, meaning there's little to no reason to revisit them.There isn't much else like this on PSP, and there doesn't appear to be anything similar on the horizon. Unfortunately for Sony, that's not a good enough reason to buy it.

But why should you forgive that? And, even if you do, you won't be happy with the quality of the actual content. Ape Academy may be a nice idea, but it's a nice idea supported by lots of reasonable ideas badly executed and badly pieced together. In short, there isn't much reason to buy it - however much you love monkeys. And we love monkeys, which makes us even more cross.

The gameplay is painfully repetitive and uninspired, and a vast majority of the mini-games just aren't fun; they say that your schooldays are the happiest of your life - but whoever said that couldn’t have been taught at the Ape Academy.

It's just a shame there isn't more of that, because for all its good ideas Ape Academy feels too sluggish and inconsistent to be truly recommendable at this point. It's fun, and we're happy to sit and play it, but we still hope it'll be sharpened up a bit for its appearance in the West, or our preview diplomacy may well escape us completely.

Each mini-game is trailed by a screen listing the controls (although it's in Japanese, it does at least give you an idea of which buttons you'll be using, even if you can't immediately figure out what they're for) and can last anything from a few seconds to a couple of minutes, often with various rounds within the same game. This is no quick-fire Wario Ware clone, for sure.
