Urban Reign review:
In conclusion, Urban Reign has the initial feel of a good fighter – simple controls and a decent blocking/deflection system. But beyond that there's not many ways for a player to vary the attacks that Brad can use, especially against multiple opponents, which will leave just about anyone significantly frustrated as the difficulty goes up.

The combo system itself isn’t the deepest in the world, with each of the game’s 60 characters (including Tekken’s own Paul Phoenix and Marshall Law) really only having a few basic melee combos, however there’s more to ...

Urban Reign review:
Beat-'em-ups should be fun and playable however good you are, and become appreciably better the more you understand their subtleties; Urban Reign is rarely fun or playable however good you are, and is about as subtle as, well, its tagline. "Are you hard enough to break some skulls?" I'm not, no, and you gave me no chance to be. Back in your ho.

In the end, Urban Reign proves to be little more than a worthy overnight rental, or if you must own it, ensure that its sitting in the bargain bin before splashing out that hard-earned cash.

Urban Reign review:
In classic beat ‘em up fashion, the action hops right into the punch bowl thanks to the simple controls. Your primary attacks consist of only strike and grapple, which can be modified by pressing Up or Down. There are also a few ‘special arts,’ which are the only things that can stop or dodge another special attack.

Urban Reign review:
That is where this game will live or die in the end, as the appeal for such a title is not as widespread as years ago. Keep in mind this is Namco’s second foray into the action/adventure genre in the last year, and with neither title standing out as groundbreaking new franchises, I think time would be spent better evolving their current fighters like Tekken and Soul Calibur. -- Brian Peterson

Beat 'em ups are making a comeback this late in the PS2's lifespan . Namco's brawler does thrill, but misses out on the crucial online play and a decent story.

Urban Reign review:
The voice acting ranges from decent to poor, and the weak plot and script don’t help matters much. The music isn’t bad, and it blends nicely into the background, which is about all you can ask for from a game like this. Punches and kicks sound like they would in a movie, and the sounds of people being slammed into things, and objects breaking and shattering are quite satisfying.

Urban Reign review:
In Urban Reign, players assume the role of a gritty street brawler who has been hired by one of the city's dominant gangs to protect its leader. Players are thrown into a full-blown turf war, involving gang corruption and street justice that spans from the neighborhood block all the way to the upper levels of city government.

That’s right PS2 owners, you can be proud you took the bullet for all gamerdom. While Urban Reign looks and sounds good, that pretty facade hides a repetitive, uninteresting and frustrating game that just can’t seem to deliver where it counts: gameplay. Sorry, Namco. Better luck with Soul Caliber III.

Toss your enemy skyward and watch your partner end the violence by catching and slamming him onto the pavement. Use whatever it takes to bring the pain - Pick from over 30 weapons to open up new moves specific to each weapon. Broken bottles, bats, and knives add to the mayhem.

+ Decent controls manages to rise above stinkers like Beat Down.+ The graphics look pretty lively, but that's the Soul Calibur/Tekken teams for you.+ The inclusion of a four-player versus mode is great.- The AI is rather unbalanced- some foes are schleps while others are absolute monsters.

Urban Reign review:
Coming into Namco’s latest title, Urban Reign, I was expecting a typical beat’em-up style experience, however after firing the game up for the first time I was surprised to find that it isn’t a beat’em-up at all but rather more of a standard 3D fighting game in the vein of something like a Def Jam: Fight for NY. Developed by the masterminds behind the vaunted Tekken and Soul Calibur fighting franchises, Urban Reign melds the styles of those to titles into one enticingly fun and super-difficult urban brawler that looks, sounds and plays remarkably well.

Urban Reign review:
Also, many stages include a variety of different weapons lying around, which a player can pick up and use to beat his foes senseless. Some moves are more effective than others, though. For example, I've yet to come across any battle in which the taunt button did anything other than leave me open to a brutal attack.

Unfortunately, the cheap difficulty and blandness of the story mode make the game difficult to recommend to all but the most hardcore beat-'em-up fanatics. If you've got a Mike Haggar tattoo and don't mind beating down the same thugs over and over again a hundred times, you may get some mileage out of Urban Reign.
