Soul Calibur III review: Doesn't break its own mold, but fans of fighting games will find plenty of value. New characters and character creation are good, but the new play mode isn't so hot.

Soul Calibur III review: Namco have shown that they have staying power. This isn’t a rehash – it’s an addition. It’s like the Director’s Cut of a film, and it’s one you’ll visit time and time again. I do think Soul Calibur 3 should be a part of many peoples collection.

Soul Calibur III review: Sidestepping still doesn’t seem to avoid as many attacks as it should, but nonetheless has its place in combat. These are all very minor gripes, though, and shouldn’t deter anyone from adding this to their collection. Once again, Soul Calibur is one of the very top-tier fighting franchises.

Soul Calibur III review: Namco returns for another bout of weapon-based beat'em up action.

Soul Calibur III review: The beefed-up single-player content is worth the asking price on its own, it's still a fantastic multiplayer game (that's maybe not as perfectly balanced as it once was), and yes, it's shame there's no online play, but that's no excuse to pass up on a hugely enjoyable, addictive, rewarding title that'll last months.

Soul Calibur III review: Which all leaves me in a bit of a sticky situation. This is a great fighting game, but can I mark it down for being pretty poor at doing something that other games in the genre don't even try to do (apart from Tekken 5's awful 'Devil Within' mode)? No, I don't think so - Soulcalibur 3 is an excellent fighter.

Soul Calibur III review: The only problem with Soul Calibur III is the over-use of levels that were found in the previous title, and the rather disappointing Chronicles of the Sword mode that fails to offer any true gameplay life. The level of polish, however, does allow for these problems to be overlooked, as the fluent controls and impressive presentation are certainly of a high standard.

Soul Calibur III review: The sublime fighting series' return is marred only by some slight 'sameyness'.
