Sonic Riders review: Taking a break from the platform genre, Sonic goes racing ala Wipeout, with plenty of speed and more speed. Decent racer, albeit marred by a momentum-killing annoyance.

Sonic Riders review: That’s one of the biggest problems with the whole current-gen Sonic franchise for me – one of its main design precepts seems to be to take control out of the player’s hands as much as possible. The general feeling this game conveys is confusion and chaos, akin to being flushed down a jet-powered toilet. If that sounds fun to you, I say go for it.

Sonic Riders review: Now Sonic already known as quite the speedy fellow and I know I was expecting to race on foot or in some kind of a small four wheeled vehicle.  Sonic Riders review: Sonic’s got a lot of catching up to do. If he ever wants to overtake Mario’s dominance of the tenuous spin-off, he’s got a long way to go.

Sonic Riders review: In Sonic Riders, Dr. Eggman challenges Sonic and his friends to a Worldwide Grand Prix, and the prize for coming out on top is an ultra-rare Chaos Emerald! Gliding on air boards gamers will experience a heightened sense of Extreme sports-style racing tension as Sonic and his pals perform tricks and stunts over treacherous wide-open terrain.

Sonic Riders review: But, in the end, it's the gameplay that matters most. That's where Sonic Riders fails. Racing games are supposed to be games of skill, not chance. Sonic Riders, despite all of its shortcuts and power-up items, feels like a game of chance. What's more, it's also a real pain in the ass to play.
