If you’re one of those people that just loves to cause carnage, FlatOut is worth a rental, but under no circumstances is the game worth $49.99. Just because the publisher wants $50 for a game, that doesn’t mean it’s not a budget title. This will be $20 in two months – wait until then.

Flat-Out is an adrenaline-inducing racing game with an exciting story line, spectacular crashes and a not-too-serious attitude in the best movie-like fashion. One of the 'Flat-Out' features is the "stunt" event where you race your car, and catapult the driver at a specific moment using him as a dart, bowling ball and other projectiles.

With all the different types of car racing games on the market, it’s far too easy to drop them into neat little boxes marked "Arcade" and "Simulation". There are subtle and broad variations within the two subgenres and unless you’re smart enough to experiment with as many games as possible, you’re stuck with reading skewed opinions that toss up unfair comparisons to titles that are completely different save for cosmetic elements. Which leads us to the following review of FlatOut, by Finnish developer Bugbear. While I was patiently waiting for my review copy to show up, I’ve been pulling my hair out in clumps whenever I hear this game directly compared to EA’s superb smash Burnout 3 or Monster Games great sleeper Test Drive: Eve of Destruction. While I’m sure Bugbear is pleased with some of the comparisons, I’ll bet a small chunk of pocket change that they’re also a bit annoyed that some folks only see the superficial aspects these games share instead of appreciating the whole pie they’ve spent a few years preparing.
