Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: In one of the world’s many silly coincidences, here is a videogame release to come out at the same time as a feature film with the exact same title. Our in-house teams...

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: The console releases are better than the truly execrable PC game of the same name, but there's still no reason for it to exist, beyond an attempt to line pockets at the expense of movie fans.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: Parents, please read this very carefully - this game is just not worth the purchase. I could see this game potentially be an interesting game to get your kids but this game just isn't anything that it was made up to be. It has so many problems that it's just not worthy of a rental or a purchase.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: Every gamer knows the history of movie tie-in games and their dreadful track record, so whenever a new one comes along it’s nigh impossible to not feel some degree of skepticism no matter who developed the game or what movie it’s based on. Case in point, when the recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory game based on Tim Burton’s recent film interpretation of Roald Dahl’s classic book showed up for review I anticipated the worst, especially considering the movie itself was nothing to go gaga over. To my surprise however, the game isn’t nearly as terrible as I expected it to be, though it’s certainly no gem mind you, and packs just enough entertainment value to engage fans of the movie and/or storyline in general for at least a solid rental period.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: But faithful or not, we can safely say that the voice-acting is annoying. Graphically it's functional at best, though some of the cut-scenes are quite nicely styled. It's hard to find good things to say about it, other than it works - in that it is technically possible to play it without dying - and some parts aren't quite as hateful as others.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: Sonically, the in-game sounds are cutesy and twee, but the voice work in the game was refreshingly good, with the actors doing a reasonable job of keeping the flowery dialogue running along. In all, this is rather what I would expect from this kind of movie tie-in. I’d find something else to play and go watch both films and read the book, plus its sequel. Much more entertaining.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: If ever a movie (or book) offered an unprecedented wealth of quirky content ripe for translation into the virtual reality of videogame fun, it's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Unfortunately, this take on the obvious gimme is squandered...

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: Movie tie-in games continually provide the worst gaming experiences possible. And Charlie is no different, in fact this is the worst we've played in a long time. Worse than Fight Club. Yes, really.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: So desperate that my "pro list" consisted of bullet points like "Charlie's voice is done by the same actor from the movie," "the controls are okay at best," "the music is jaunty," "this game is in color," and finally, "at least this game doesn't punch me in the face."

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: Still, great audio doesn't go very far when coupled with such poor gameplay. Games based on hot movie properties are rarely good, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory doesn't break this trend. The console releases are better than the truly execrable PC game of the same name, but there's still no reason for it to exist, beyond an attempt to line pockets at the expense of movie fans.
