Beatmania review:
Tired of dancing to the tunes? Konami lets you become the DJ, with the aid of a cool controller. Fun for a while, if not for the dated songlist.

Beatmania review:
Beatmania is a revolutionary new interactive DJ simulation game for the PlayStation 2, which combines high-energy pulsating music with cutting-edge videos. Utilizing a specially designed DJ controller and featuring more than 50 tracks, Beatmania lets gamers feel the vibe, drop the beats and create the pulsing energy of a club in their own homes.

Beatmania review:
Before the DDR craze spread throughout the world, before a quirky game like Gitaroo Man became a cult classic and before Guitar Hero released for the PS2 last year to showers of accolades, beatmania essentially put the music/rhythm-based videogame on the map when it hit arcades in Japan almost a decade ago to nothing but rabid fanfare and success. Since then, beatmania has seen numerous releases in the arcades and on consoles in Japan, yet for some bewildering reason it has taken Konami until this year to bring the original Bemani classic to North American shores for a widespread console release. Now available here stateside for the PS2, beatmania is a mixed bag affair, showing glimpses of what made the game such a hit in Japan while also showing its age compared to other current rhythm games in a genre that has substantially evolved in recent years.

Beatmania review:
However, the weak song choice and length of the songs kill the game for casual fans or those trying to find out what it’s all about. This is disappointing, as now only the die-hard fans will understand the sensation that is Beatmania. The rest of us will be scratching our heads more than the turntable in wonder of what the big deal is. -- Brian Peterson

Beatmania review:
The combo system then applies itself to the notes you hit and the notes you miss. In all, you're looking to get over a certain percentage to beat a song, or fail, depending on your performance. You're really supposed to listen to the music and get into the groove with the note timing. This isn't always as easy as it sounds due the actual musical sets themselves.

Beatmania review:
The most ideal thing you can do if you're dead set on getting into Beatmania is purchase the US bundle/controller and, if you can get access to an import-playing PS2, go buy yourself any of the Beatmania IIDX titles Between 3rd and 10th style, each with a good selection of songs in their own right. As it is, the domestic version is only worth it as a barebones introduction to the series

Beatmania review:
Beatmania's long-overdue release outside of Japan shows off its many weaknesses, with the most egregious of which being its unimpressive song list.
