187 Ride Or Die review: 187 Ride or Die tries to make a name for itself as a "playa" with gamers, but sadly comes across as more of a "poser."

187 Ride Or Die review: 187 Ride or Die tells the story of a reluctant urban hero named Buck, a young man living a thug's life seething with money, fast cars and beautiful women -- with danger lurking around every corner. Set in the underworld of Los Angeles, Buck must defend the territory of his mentor Dupree from a menacing nemesis and his gang of bandit roughriders, led by Cortez (N. Gugliemi), who are determined to take control of the streets.

187 Ride Or Die review: For those reasons it seems incredibly digital, almost like something we might have played on the Mega Drive. There's nothing particularly wrong with the game from a technical point of view. The cut-scenes are quite nicely done, the graphics are uninteresting but entirely functional, and the game certainly doesn't feel broken. It's just very shallow indeed.

187 Ride Or Die review: The small, regimented courses and samey weapons selection, coupled with bad handling on every vehicle lead to a game which outstays its welcome in only a few hours. It is unfortunate that the title of this game should offer a choice between “riding” and “death”, because in a game so lacking in enjoyment, it's really no choice at all.

187 Ride Or Die review: It’s worth looking at if you can get it cheap or rent it out, but with another potentially superb Burnout game coming along soon, it’s very difficult to recommend you spending your hard-earned on this title.

187 Ride Or Die review: While not a total loss, it definitely is not worth the price of admission. If you really want to give 187 a go, I would suggest calling a friend and sharing the fun. Even so, you would still be better off spending your dough on Burnout: Revenge, which should be out as you read this.

187 Ride Or Die review: You also might die if you spend too much time trying to piece together this stereotypical, slipshod narrative. Just wait until you have to sit through the terrible “plot” snippets before and after every mission. It helps if you think of the plot as the background bio of a random hood from a beat ‘em up game like Beat Down: Fists of Vengeance.

187 Ride Or Die review: L1 activates your speed boost, and L2 can flip the camera around so you can see who's riding your bumper. Steering runs a bit on the loose side, though this is mainly to accommodate the drifting used to acquire speed boosts.
