You won't stand a chance against the Dominators' more advanced ships until you've done this kind of research, so if you want to win via hard line tactics, then you have your work cut out for you. It is also possible to negotiate some kind of truce and garner a victory that way, but I don't about you... but trying to parley with hostile robots doesn't seem like the wisest course of action to me.
