..So: there's the dilemma, really. It's an innovative management game in many ways... but it's also a glacially slow one that this reviewer particularly doesn't find overwhelmingly engaging. Not all experiments succeed, and while its successes and design places it in the more appreciated example of its type, you can't help but feel separated from the babble of life before you.

However, for me, it is missing that essential hook which compels you to forgo all bodily functions and the standard day-night cycle. I still enjoyed playing Immortal Cities a good deal, yet I was content to help the Pharaohs out for a far shorter period of time than I would have given them in the past.

City building sims aren’t exactly brimming off the shelves as you might find with just about any other genre, but the comparatively small number of such titles that do make it onto the radar every year somehow manage to be of a consistently high standard. Children of the Nile, or Immortal Cities, or whatever we’re supposed to call it for short, is one that we’ve tracked for a while, mainly due to the fact that it was developed by the former Impressions team who gave us Caesar and Pharaoh.
