Battlefield 2: Special Forces review: By now, if you own a PC, you’ve probably played Battlefield 2. If you haven’t, then you are missing out on one of the most adrenaline-pumping experiences in the gaming industry right now. Although the game was extremely buggy until a series of good patches were released, it still held together with some duct tape for a game that killed almost anything on the PC. Meanwhile, DICE, Digital Illusions, and EA were also hard at work on the expansion pack, the highly anticipated Special Forces. Taking the “battlefield” out of Battlefield 2 and inserting a “close infantry combat” would probably be a little more appropriate, and Special Forces does that at its best and its worst. The expansion still doesn’t make BF2 the perfect game, but it sure as hell does make it a refreshing course in why the Battlefield franchise kicks so much ass.

Battlefield 2: Special Forces review: With a few technical issues aside, if you are a fan of Battlefield 2, you will still want to grab this expansion; if only for the new weapons, vehicles, and stuff to do. If the original didn’t do it for you then there really isn’t enough here to turn you onto the series. Still, this expansion is a well-needed boost to an already exciting action title. -- Brian Peterson

Battlefield 2: Special Forces review: Leviathan is the best example of how the maps combine indoor CQB with expansive outdoor areas. Devil's Perch has a nice linear progression up a hill to an asylum with a single immovable wheelchair to show that it's supposed to be creepy. And there's no denying that Night Flight's centerpiece, a cargo plane in the middle of a wide open runway, is a great Entebbe-esque gimmick.

Battlefield 2: Special Forces review: It solves some of its problems - the lack of maps being a main bugbear - and adds a few more new toys to keep the militar-o-philes happy. Career soldiers won't be disappointed and those considering a second tour of duty have enough incentives to head back into the field.
