Alice's parents die in a house fire, and Alice is locked up inside a mental institution after repeated attempts at suicide. The game is an interactive horror game, unlike games like Out Of This World, and Resident Evil, you interact with the madness as Alice tries to escape the demented surroundings she's been thrusted into.
American McGee's Alice review:
The background story for this game is a bit distressing. Alice's parents perish in a fire a year before the game begins and since that time, Alice has been confined to an asylum, nearly comatose, suffering from the guilt of surviving her parents tragic end. The game is Alice's struggle back to sanity. - Staci Krause, Grrlgamer.com
American McGee's Alice review:
Once upon a looking glass and down a rabbit hole, Lewis Caroll wrote the books "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass." Since then, there has been much controversy on what Alice was really about. A short while ago, a twisted man named American McGee released a new chapter to the Wonderland Series. But this chapter only adds more confusion to the already muddled world of Wonderland. Much has changed since Alice left Wonderland on her 10th birthday. The Queen of Hearts now rules with a vicious cold heart. The beautiful scenery has been twisted and distorted. Most of Wonderland's inhabitants are now transformed into the Queen's Henchmen. Those who aren't slaves of the Queen stay in hiding for fear of loosing their heads. You, as Alice, are summoned back to Wonderland by the White Rabbit, one of your few friends in the game. From their on you are led by The Cheshire Cat, who has become nearly anorexic from having to fend for himself for food. At first, you are only equipped with your faithful knife, which Alice seems to have a strange affection for. Later on, you receive such toys as diabolical dice, jack in the box bombs, razor sharp playing cards, and mythical weapons such as the vorpal blade (used in Through the Looking Glass to slay the Jabberwock.) As you progress through Wonderland, you are bombarded by friends, foes, and shocking plot twists. This is truly not the Alice we all know. Alice was made using an enhanced version of the Quake 3 engine and fully utilizes the amazing capabilities of the Voodoo5 graphics card. Now the sound is another thing. Not only is this game eye candy with awesome background, but it's soundtrack is made by NIN (Nine Inch Nails). The sound effects are amazing. You can hear everything from the pleads and jeers of the insane children, to the separating body parts of a decapitated Card Guard. The only problem I see is that the gameplay is not very requiring, but I would play through the entire thing just to see the ear pierced Cheshire Cat again.
