Age Of Empires III review:
However, I still can't help but feel more could have been done to make AOE3 a truly next generation RTS title. AOE3 is still a very enjoyable game, but whether or not it is a true upgrade over AOE2 is questionable.

There is nothing terribly new or original here, but this still offers a very solid RTS experience.Read the full review!

Age Of Empires III review:
Ensemble Studios has never simply churned out the AoE series and with AoE 3 they've developed another winner, sticking to what makes AoE great whileinnovating at the same time. Good show, says Eoghan.

Combining solid game play, stellar physics, and some of the most vibrant graphics available on the PC, Age of Empires III is the alpha male of the RTS pack.

Age Of Empires III review:
Age of Empires III is set in 1500 A.D. and chronicles the Age of Discovery that started around the time that Columbus "discovered" the new world. The single player campaign follows American history up through 1850, and in multiplayer mode, you'll be able to choose from among eight different civilizations, and there will include free-for-all and team-vs-team matches for up to eight players.

Age Of Empires III review:
It’s just that, finally, I’ve come to terms with the tragedy that is Age of Empires 3. It’s hardly the romantic reunion fans were expecting to have with another staple in their beloved series, and it’s not even a good RTS when looked at in the grand scheme of things.

Age Of Empires III review:
Still, there are some problems with the design, the unit AI, and the high level of micromanagement that is required to play the game on the higher levels of difficulty. In the end, Age of Empires III truly feels like a continuation of the 1999 classic. If that's good enough for you, then you'll definitely want to check it out. - William Abner

Let me preface this review by saying that the first computer game I ever owned was the original Age of Empires . I bought it a full month before my first Windows machine and I read the entire manual cover-to-cover. I practically memorized the tech tree before I even slipped the CD into the drive.

Age Of Empires III review:
Unlocking and adding the improvements may not have any effect on the gameplay, but it does feel as though the player is rewarding their Home City for its support for the cause. Not only that but their addition means that there’s a connection between the settled Old World seen in the previous Age of Empires instalments, and the colonial New World. Page 1 of 3 //

Age Of Empires III review:
The plot actually got worse. Age of Empires III goes to the trouble of setting itself in actual time and space - colonial America - but avoids all the interesting and prickly issues like genocide, epidemics and slavery, instead subbing in a wimpy tale of a family destined to protect the Holy Grail from a Satanic Cult.

Age Of Empires III review:
.. wherever you wander on most of the region-themed maps there’s usually some tantalising prize waiting to be collected. These hand-outs are symptomatic of the stagnation at the heart of Age of Empires 3. Even with the new home cities, gameplay feels tired and characterless. Bombarding players with shiny baubles and inconsequential gifts can’t hide that.

Smoke billows from muskets, cannons leap back as they expel their fury, building spires burst into flame and collapse into themselves, and the masts of ships crash to the deck as the vessel shudders with the impact of enemy fire. Every game of Age of Empires III drips with spectacle.

+ Gorgeous graphics and physics shine.+ Home City adds new pre-game strategy.+ Campaign displays range of game, is great practice.+ New Age of Empires!- Not much new for up-to-date RTS players.- Voice acting and some sound editing is poor.- Serious framerate problems in large battles, even on high-end machines.

Age Of Empires III review:
Still, even a bad RTS from Ensemble is better than a mediocre RTS from just about anyone else. With the new lush game engine and the company's obvious enthusiasm for the subject matter, Ensemble knows how to make all those doppelsoldners, strelets, and culverins look sexy, even if you don't know what they are. And that's half way toward making a really good RTS. But only half way.

Age Of Empires III review:
It's a rock-solid package, one that tightens every part of the existing game with a facelift worthy of the most talented plastic surgeon. Ensemble has proven no one can beat it at its own game, but neither will it be Age of Empires III the wannabes are aiming at in the coming months.

Age Of Empires III review:
Age of Empires is still one of the cornerstones of the RTS genre, but with current offerings such as Rise of Nations and Dawn of War, it becomes clear that Ensemble has not taken a step forward with Age of Empires III. If anything, this game is a step sideways made in shinier, more attractive shoes.

Now the wait is over. The game is slated to appear in stores in North America on Oct. 18. Published by Microsoft, the game places players in the time period of roughly 1500-1850, picking up where "Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings" left off.
