It's a far cry from scouring villages for clues and visiting various identikit inns - and every time your eyes do wander, there's something for them to rest upon, like the sight of a Piranha Plant in the audience on the combat screen, the seats around him mysteriously empty...

Paper Mario 2 review:
Among video game icons, Mario still tops them all. The vertically-challenged plumber with a Hitler mustache that chomps down on mushrooms in almost psychedelic environments has taken us on tons of fantastic trips throughout the years. Through it all, he has stood as a test of time, and although his brother Luigi still gets no love (especially for super-fantastic Luigi’s Mansion), Mario still ceases to amaze us with his simple gameplay and never-ending tales of rescuing Princess Peach. Many may remember the original Paper Mario, or if you are really old like some of us, the original Super Mario RPG back on SNES. Now, we get to take another adventure into the RPG world of Mario with Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and man, it just goes to show that there is almost nothing Mario can do wrong.
Paper Mario 2 review:
We may never know what inspired the folks at Nintendo to create a world in which everything and everyone is made of paper. Perhaps their admiration for the ancient Egyptians exceeds our own, or maybe there's just something in the water over there. Whatever the case, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a game quite unlike any other, combining elements of platforming, roleplaying, puzzle-solving and reflex-testing games into an engaging, downright charming and - it must be said - remarkably cohesive, whole. Our internal axiom-meter dictates that a Jack of all trades must be a master of none, but somehow Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (henceforth known as PM2) defies history and conventional wisdom. All those disparate elements combine in some unfathomable way to produce what is unquestionably one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences on offer.
