Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: The console releases are better than the truly execrable PC game of the same name, but there's still no reason for it to exist, beyond an attempt to line pockets at the expense of movie fans.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: Every gamer knows the history of movie tie-in games and their dreadful track record, so whenever a new one comes along it’s nigh impossible to not feel some degree of skepticism no matter who developed the game or what movie it’s based on. Case in point, when the recent Charlie and the Chocolate Factory game based on Tim Burton’s recent film interpretation of Roald Dahl’s classic book showed up for review I anticipated the worst, especially considering the movie itself was nothing to go gaga over. To my surprise however, the game isn’t nearly as terrible as I expected it to be, though it’s certainly no gem mind you, and packs just enough entertainment value to engage fans of the movie and/or storyline in general for at least a solid rental period.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: So desperate that my "pro list" consisted of bullet points like "Charlie's voice is done by the same actor from the movie," "the controls are okay at best," "the music is jaunty," "this game is in color," and finally, "at least this game doesn't punch me in the face."

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: The fetch-questing gets old fast, but the game ties in closely with the film in graphics, sound, and atmosphere. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is tailor-made for a younger group, and keeping that in mind, the game does what it’s set out to do. More experienced gamers will want to look elsewhere for their platforming needs though.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: Still, great audio doesn't go very far when coupled with such poor gameplay. Games based on hot movie properties are rarely good, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory doesn't break this trend. The console releases are better than the truly execrable PC game of the same name, but there's still no reason for it to exist, beyond an attempt to line pockets at the expense of movie fans.

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory review: + Inventive use of Oompa Loompas and Wonka candy.+/- Controls are all right, but I've played better platformers.+/- Graphics have colorful design to them, and the sound has its moments, but don't really go overboard on dazzle.- Way too simple in nature, as the game was clearly built for kids.
