Pilots have their own set of stats that figure into battle, as well as skills that directly affect the strategic situation. Certain abilities restore damage, extend attack ranges, or allow counterattacks. There are a lot of small factors that affect battle, so you make a lot of decisions that have a tiny bit of impact on the battle. Of course every little bit helps, as the saying goes.
