Lunar: Dragon Song review: It's been thirteen years since Lunar: The Silver Star was released for the Sega CD, one of the best RPGs ever released and one of the most challenging too. So there we stood at one of the EB stores looking at DS games, when we found Lunar: Dragon Song sitting quietly on the bottom shelf. For $19.99, my husband didn't think twice and grabbed it.

The last time I played Lunar it was a rental copy of Lunar 2 for the Playstation. I never even got to finish it before I had to take it back, and I never found it again. I have fond memories of the Lunar games, even if I didn't go far in the Sega CD one (but completed Silver Star Story Complete on the PS), so I was happy I could once again dive in into the magic land created by Goddess Althena.

Lunar: Dragon Song review: Pros:- Overly simplistic design may appeal to RPG newcomersCons:- Changes from RPG conventions and designs are merely frustrating- Plot and characters fail to excitingly engage the player- Far too simple an experience to be really satisfying

Lunar: Dragon Song review: It's stupid, incoherent and turned bad by some silly mistakes and bad parenting decisions. You don't really want it in your house but, underneath it all, you know that's not its fault.Thank you Doctor. I think I feel better now. No, don't worry, I won't run home. And see you in eleven years for the next blue moon.

Lunar: Dragon Song review: This RPG exudes some of the series' old school charm, but its dated combat and uninspired visuals fails to impress modern gamers.

Lunar: Dragon Song review: Lunar: Dragon Song brings the cult classic RPG series back for an outing on the Nintendo DS. Follow martial Jian on an adventure through a 2D fantasy world, populated by exotic beastmen and watched over by the benevolent Goddess Althena. A score of unusual play mechanics and the ability to fight enemies in Virtue Mode or Combat Mode makes Lunar: Dragon Song an RPG not quite like anything else out there.

Lunar: Dragon Song review:   Sure, it’s the first RPG for the DS, but it doesn’t make great use of the hardware, and since the DS can play GBA games, I’d recommend that you just go pull one of those far-superior games out.  Games like Golden Sun offer a lot more than this, and can be had for less money to boot.  Unless you’re a big Lunar fan, you won’t miss anything by not playing this game.

Lunar: Dragon Song review: Some aspects are not very engaging, while others are generally interesting, and players are bound to draw their own conclusions as to how they are affected by how everything comes together. In the end, however, a poorly executed but pervasive combat system alongside excruciatingly-slow movement is what really what does the game in.

Lunar: Dragon Song review: Is this the dual-screened RPG we've been waiting for, or just a dissapointing prequel? Check out the DSGaming review inside...

Lunar: Dragon Song review: The recent addition to the classic series falls short.

Lunar: Dragon Song review: For the most part, you can stay in virtue mode and level up your party, but for some quests you'll need to switch over to combat mode. Having split battle modes seems unnecessary, since just about every other role-playing game manages to dish out both experience and items with a single battle system.  Page 2 of 2 »

Lunar: Dragon Song preview: Each offers a specific benefit and function for your party. For example, selecting the normal mode allows you to pick up special battle cards which can be used in combat situations and during multiplayer matches. However, the new "Virtue" mode is the more rewarding of the two, as it will level up your characters with experience points (referenced as an "Althena Conduct" in the game).
