Big Brain Academy review: For anyone looking to use a DS to get their mind in gear, Big Brain Academy is a perfect match. For others who are just looking for a good time, the game may be worth checking out from an in-store demo (or a demo sent wirelessly from a Big Brain Academy owner), but it is probably not at the top of the DS’s ‘must-have’ list.

Big Brain Academy review: Most importantly, this lacks Brain Age’s interactive Sudoku puzzles, which for me provided that game with replay value long after I’d grown tired of testing myself. Still, this is fun and, for those of us still in the thrall of this new type of game, provides enough new content to hold us over until the next version of Brain Age.

Big Brain Academy review: Those entranced by Brain Training should bear in mind there's another version of that due along one day, and it's probably wiser to wait, and fulfil your dreams of buying an extra round at the pub while Trinidad tonk England instead.

Big Brain Academy review: After playing all of the various minigames and trying out multiplayer, Big Brain Academy is fun in short bursts. For $19.99 it’s a pretty good value and I think those that enjoyed Brain Age will surely like Academy. If I had to give a nod to one or the other I’d still go with Brain Age since it was the original brain game and it has built-in incentives for daily play. -- Craig Majaski

Big Brain Academy review: You'll run out of things to do relatively quickly, but considering the game's budget price, it all adds up in the end.

Big Brain Academy review: Even when you have the hang of them, unlike the simpler, fast-paced games, it's possible to sink a lot of time into a problem and still get it wrong, which can destroy your rating in that category. In other games, luck seems to play a bigger part that it should. As a result, your strengths and weaknesses that determine your "brain type" can change wildly from one session to the next.

Big Brain Academy preview: Like Brain Age, all you need is to do is devote minutes of your day on a consistent basis in order to get the most of this title. A little does go a long way.

Big Brain Academy preview: Lobe might start a lesson with "j00r keW1! Press any button to begin, n00b! LOL OMG!" It's actually worth mentioning that there aren't really lessons at this academy, and you pretty much direct your course of study on your own. Though things could possibly change in the final version, there were currently three options. The one in the middle, Test, is a good place to start.
